They Could Be Bought (1889)

Charles Henry Wilcken, a friend and bodyguard to such churchleaders as George Q. Cannon and Wilford Woodruff during the polygamy raids in the later 1880s, once confirmed to Abraham Cannon who had just escaped arrest, that he, Wilcken, had “bought Doyle (U. S. Marshal) off, and got his promise that… [Cannon] should not be molested nor should any other person without sufficient notice being given for them to escape.” Wilcken also got from the marshal the names of fifty-one others about to be arrested in Utah and Emery countries. Historical evidence now suggests there were several other marshals on the Mormon payroll, which is believed to be the reason why so many polygamists escaped arrest.
