It’s not the kind of mission that one dreams of being called to and it was a blow to the pride of George Goddard, a well known Salt Lake businessman. But a new paper mill had been erected to supply badly needed newsprint in the Utah Territory and a paper mill required rags for the manufacture of such paper in the nineteenth century. Thus, Brother Goddard was given the task by Brigham Young of preaching the cause of rags around the territory. This he effectively did for three years, carrying a basket on one arm and an empty sack on the other. Traveling door-to-door and pulpit-to-pulpit, he was able to acquire over 100,000 pounds of rags during his successful mission.
