A Bit of Deception? (1846)
Posted in The Nauvoo Era (1839-1846) by D Marriott at 4:14 pm |

Although it doesn’t explain all the last minute construction and long-term planning in Nauvoo during the final months, Heber C. Kimball explained the last minute finishing of his own home that he lived in only a few months. Speaking from the pulpit of the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City in 1853, he admitted to a bit of deception on his part. “I went to work and built that large house (restored in Nauvoo today) when I knew we should leave in a short time, to excite your feeling with the belief we were going to stay there, that you might build and complete that temple. This course was for your own salvation.” How well this deception worked we can’t tell, since a large percentage of the Saints were aware of their impending move by this time.

Kimball, Heber C. Kimball, p. 119.
