When Brigham Young refused to change his settlement plans and take the Saints to California as Sam Brannan advised, Brannan became angry and decided to seek revenge. He did this by pretending to the Saints in California that he was Brigham’s agent and responsible for the collecting of tithes. Using such money for personal investments he was soon one of the wealthiest citizens in the state. When Brigham learned of his apostasy he sent Amasa Lyman and Charles C. Rich to ask for the tithes he had fraudulently collected. Brannan’s reply: “I’ll give up the Lord’s money when he [Brigham Young] sends me a receipt signed by the Lord and no sooner.” Brannan died a pauper in 1889.
