Who’s In Charge (1847)

In December 1847 Brigham was finally sustained as President of the Church. He overcame the objections of Quorum members such as Orson and Parley Pratt and John Taylor who felt such a move would diminish their roles in the Quorum of the Twelve. But it was essential. Members such as the Pratts and Taylor were teaching that at any time in the absence of senior member Young, the next senior member had comparable authority and could override Brigham’s orders. Meeting at Kanesville on December 5, 1847, Heber and Brigham were able to put the minds of the Twelve at ease on the question of the power that the two senior members seemed to have. Heber said “I have all the power I can handle” and after a thorough discussion Brigham was unanimously confirmed president with Heber his first counselor.
