Abandoning the Mormon Trail? (1851)
Posted in Asylum At Last (1848-1852) by D Marriott at 10:59 pm |

In April 1851, the First Presidency announced in the Fifth General Epistle that English Saints would no longer use the Mormon Trail, but plans were to route them across Central America and up the west coast to San Bernardino, saving “three thousand miles of inland navigation through a most sickly climate and country.” Discovering after a brief investigation, however, that the costs of transportation between Liverpool and the West Coast were prohibitive, the presidency, in the Sixth General Epistle in September, announced the restoration of emigration over the old route, which would be used for the next eighteen years.
